Kitchen renovations can be expensive. But while there are some kitchen renovation projects that are worth the money (and will allow you to recoup costs when you sell), other projects? Not so much.

So what, exactly, are the kitchen renovation projects that don’t deliver any bang for your buck?

A recent article from realtor.com outlined kitchen renovation projects that generally aren’t worth the investment (and are often a flat out waste of budget!), including:

• Loud backsplashes. Backsplashes can make a big visual impact in a kitchen. But everyone has different taste, and if you go with something too bold, loud, or outlandish, it might not appeal to potential buyers down the road, making it a waste of money. Instead, opt for a backsplash that’s more neutral and universally appealing.
• Designer appliances. You want to invest in appliances that are high quality and reliable. But forking out top dollar for high-end, designer appliances just isn’t worth the investment. Instead of spending your kitchen renovation budget on designer appliances, research lesser-known brands; you can often find appliances that are just as high-quality—at about half the price.
• Open shelving. Open shelving is an Instagram trend that’s better in photos than in real life. Not only does open shelving limit your storage space, but after a few weeks, all of your dishes will be covered in dust—and you’ll have to clean everything before you use it. Avoid the extra hassle and cleaning by sticking with more traditional cabinetry.
